The Sentsov group case

Updated: 21.03.2021
Case description:

Citizens of Ukraine Oleg Sentsov, Alexander Kolchenko, Alexey Cherniy, Gennady Afanasyev were imprisoned in May 2014 on charges of preparing a terrorist act (blowing up the Lenin monument and the “Eternal Flame Memorial” in Simferopol and setting fire to the offices of the “Russian Community of Crimea” organization and the party “ United Russia"). Immediately after the arrest, no charges were brought against Sentsov and Kolchenko; the investigation prevented the admission of lawyers to the detainees. The detainees were tortured by the investigators of the FSB of the Russian Federation and methods of psychological pressure. Sentsov and Kolchenko openly supported the territorial integrity of Ukraine in Crimea. The Russian Federation considers them as citizens of the Russian Federation, despite the fact that they do not have a Russian passport. The lawyers proved falsification of evidence, illegal methods of investigation and political motives, but the Russian judges ignored the arguments of the defense, and the investigators who tortured the Ukrainians were never brought to justice.
